How to Root Sony Xperia Z2 on Android 4.4.2

Sony Xperia Z2 is the latest flagship Android Smartphone which was officially announced in February and was released in March 2014. As expected, phone has awesome specs in terms of hardware with Android OS 4.4.2 KitKat, which I do believe can easily compete with the giant Samsung phones. Let’s move on to our main topic and that is how to gain root access on Xepria Z2, thanks to the xda member, DooMLoRD, who has released the working root method for Xperia Z2 with Unlocked Bootloader. In this section, We’ll learn how to flash ClockworkMod Recovery and then we’ll root Sony Xperia z2. This rooting procedure is really simple, easy and safe, as it has already been tested and confirmed to be working and will not brick your device. However, before rooting your phone, there are certain requirements and guidelines you need to know and apply in order to safely get rooted and have full root access to your device.

Rooting Sony Xperia Z2

Guidelines and Requirements:

  • Sony Xperia Z2 running Android 4.4.2 KitKat (17.1.A.2.36 – v01)
  • Make sure your phone Bootloader is already Unlocked, If not follow the Official Guide Here.
  • It is also recommended that you Backup your important data stored on your phone, because Unlocking the bootloader, wipes all data on your device.
  • From Phone Settings> Developers Options and enable USB debugging.
  • Download the Fastboot drivers From HERE
  • Also download the Advance Stock Kernel with Recovery From HERE

Flash ClockworkMod Recovery on Sony Xperia Z2

Using the Fastboot commands we’ll first flash  advance stock kernel and custom recovery, which is in this case CWM Recovery and then we’ll use the Recovery mode to flash the SuperSU zip package to gain root access on Sony Xperia Z2.

Step 1: Download the required files to your PC.

Step 2: Extract the android.rar which is the fastboot drivers folder on your desktop.

Step 3: Rename the Z2_DooMLoRD_AdvStkKernel_FW-4.4.2_17.1.A.2.36.img, file to recovery.img and move it to the android folder you’ve just extracted earlier.


Step 4: Connect your Sony Xperia Z2 to PC via the USB data cable.

Step 5: Open the adb fastboot driver folder, Hold the Shift Key+Right Click, in the folder and select the Open command window here.

Step 6: In the command window type the following command to flash the stock kernel and custom recovery:

fastboot flash boot recovery recovery.img

Within a few seconds it will Flash Custom Recovery on your device, once completed, Reboot your phone by entering the following command:

fastboot reboot

Now move on to the part 2 of the tutorial where we will flash the SuperSU app which will ultimately grants root access to your device.

Root Sony Xperia Z2

Step 1: First of download the SuperSU zip package from HERE.

Step 2: Connect your Phone to PC and Copy the SuperSU zip package to your phone SD Card.

Step 3: Next, Reboot your device into Recovery Mode, Here is how to boot it:

  • Power off your phone
  • Now turn on your phone and when you see the Sony logo and the LED light turns pink keep pressing Volume Up key till you see the recovery menu.

Step 3: Once booted into the Recovery Mode, Select the Install option and browse and select SuperSU zip file from the location where you’ve placed it.

Step 4: Confirm to flash.

Step 5: Once completely flushed, Reboot your phone using the option ‘Reboot system now’.

Congratulations!! Your Sony Xperia Z2 has successfully been rooted.

To make sure you’ve successfully got rooted, Open Google Play Store App and Install the app called ‘Root Checker‘ and run it to verify root access.
