How to Root Galaxy Tab S2 [SM-T810, SM-T710, SM-T715]

Follow the step-by-step tutorial to root your Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 with model numbers SM-T810, SM-G710 and SM-T715 running on Android 5.0.2 and 5.1.1 Lollipop latest firmware builds.

This method involves using the cf auto root method, where we will be using Odin3 to flash custom kernel in order to safely gain root access and certainly it will trip the Samsung Knox warranty.

Requirements and Guidelines:

  • This guide is specifically for the mentioned model numbers of the Galaxy Tab S2. Don’t try it on another model it may brick your phone.
  • Make backup of your important data. You can try these backup apps.
  • Install USB drivers on your PC or download Galaxy Tab S2 drivers.
  • Enable USB Debugging and OEM unlock on your device available in Developer Options tab in Settings.
  • Disable Find my Phone from Settings.
  • Make sure you’ve got enough battery charge on your phone.
  • Last but not the least, carefully read and follow the instructions to safely root your phone.

Downloads:

1. Download – Odin v3.10

2. Custom root kernel for your specific model of Galaxy Tab S2 running Android 5.0.2:

3. For Android 5.1.1 download these files:

Root Galaxy Tab S2 [SM-T810, SM-T710, SM-T715]

Galaxy-Tab-S2-root

Step 1: Unzip the downloaded files. Make sure that you get the kernel file in tar.md5 format.

Step 2: Power off your Tab S2 and reboot into download mode by pressing and holding the Volume down + Menu + Power buttons simultaneously for 5 to 6 seconds. Volume up to confirm.

Step 3: Run Odin3 flash tool and leave the default settings.

Step 4: Connect your phone to PC via the USB cable.

Step 5: Click on the AP/PDA button in Odin3 and select the kernel file tar.md5

Step 6: Wait for Odin to check the files and then hit the Start button.

Step 7: Once completed, your Tab S2 will automatically reboots and Odin should give you Pass! message.

Step 8: Finally make sure that SuperSU is installed once your Tab boots. If not, then install the SuperSU app from the play store.

Thanks to the XDA developer Chainfire and ashyx for making the root possible. If you do have any queries or need further support you can follow the discussion at xda thread.

      • Hi Imran, I am trying so hard to put my Galaxy Tab S2 in recovery mode, so i can whipe it clean because of a strange Netflix problem after rooting. Normal factory reset Freezes my Tablet sinds i rooted.

Volume Up+Home+Power brings me to the ‘download mode’, wich was unknown to me untill now. Do you have any idea what i have to do to get to recovery mode? Normal reboot freezes my tablet after rooting.

        Hope you can help me:(
        Kind regards, Robert

        • I know this is two months old, but I just had a similar issue with a Galaxy Tab 8. I put the tablet into recovery move (Volume down+ Home button then Power Button) I plugged it in to my PC with KIES3 running. Ignored the warning about SmartSwitch, and then chose the Menu TOOLS, then Firmware and Initialisation. <–Yes, the spelled Initialization wrong… LOL

It'll warn you about clearing all data and take about 30 minutes. When it's done, it's replaced the stock recovery and stock image. Dunno what it does to Knox, but unless you're selling your phone to an enterprise level company who requires hardware level security, who really cares. Just Necro-ing this post to help others as it seems this issue was not solved here. Hope it helps someone.

  1. I bought the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 last week. I jailbreak and root and tweak every device i have, but i was extra exided for the S2!! I followed the instructions step by step exactly and it was a piece of cake thanks to you !!!
    I have the SMT-810 and Android 5.0.2

  2. Hi everyone, i hope somebody can help me. The rooting process went just fine, but something really strange happened and i dont know how to solve it.
my Netflix app does not load anymore. to be exact: i can login, choose a profile, choose a serie, click on play, the screen goes on full screen and normally you wait 1-4 seconds until the serie or movie starts. well… I am waiting and waiting.. nothing. i re-installed the app. cleaned the app cache, changed profiles, routers, connections, other streaming services work flawless. Calles Netflix, but they don’t understand.

Anyone any idea? I would be so greatfull 🙂

I attempted to go back to factory defaults, but then the tablet won’t boot up anymore and freezes at the black and white SamSung Tab S2 welcome screen.
    It won’t boot, it won’t shut down…… Nothing………..
The only way (for me) to get it out is to put the tablet in download modus and root it again. Then it will boot again, but nothing is erased then 🙁

I cannot get it in the mode where i can select to erase everything and to clear the cache. (is this called the bootlader screen in Android)
Can anyone tell me how to get there in this tablet?

I cannot manage to solve this strange Netflix problem. What could this be?
The only other option i can think about is a fresh start, but i can’t get that to work either. Can anyone please help? Does anyone has an idea where to look for or what to do?

    Thanks in advance everybody!!!!!!!!

  3. It went all nice and easy, now my S2 tab does not boot. I was able to get into recovery mode and wiped the partition cache. Went to reboot – it is same. Soft bricked.
Is there anything else I can do?
I don’t want to do factory reset
