How to Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery on Galaxy S5

We have already covered how to root all variants of Samsung Galaxy S5 except the Verizon and AT&T variant as they are very strict in these terms and thus developers are unable to root them so quickly as compare to other variants but do not underestimate the XDA developers, they will soon come up with a solution. Now when you’ve successfully rooted your Galaxy S5, now its time to try something different and install a Custom Recovery. In this guide we’ll learn how to safely flash ClockworkMod Recovery on Samsung Galaxy S5. This recovery works on all models of Galaxy S5 except AT&T and Verizon. So let’s move on and learn how to flash CWM Custom Recovery.

CWM Recovery for Galaxy S5

Before you proceed for the installation process make sure that you have already rooted your GS5. If not link is given above! Proceed at your own risk.

CWM Recovery currently Supports the following variants of Samsung Galaxy S5:

How to Flash ClockworkMod Recovery on Samsung Galaxy S5

Step 1: First of all download CWM recovery image for Galaxy S5.

Step 2: Also download Samsung Flashing application

Step 3: Unzip the Odin3 folder and put the CMW recovery tar.md5 image file in the same folder.

Step 4: Run Odin3 application.

Step 5: Turn Off your Galaxy S5 and Reboot it into Download Mode, Hold the Volume Down+Home  and Power buttons altogether at the same time. Further hit the Volume Up to continue.

Step 6: In Odin3 settings make sure that Repartition is not checked.

Step 7: Click on the PDA button and select the philz_touch_6.26.6-klte.tar.md5 from the folder.

Step 8: Hit the START button to flash the latest version of CWM recovery on Galaxy S5.

Wait for Odin3 to flash the recovery file, In a while it will be completed, once done, your phone will automatically reboots. Now to verify that you’ve successfully flushed the recovery you need to reboot your phone into Custom Recovery mode by pressing and holding the Volume Up+Home+Power, buttons simultaneously.

Congratulations!! You’ve successfully installed CWM Recovery on Samsung Galaxy S5. What’s next?     I hold them all, but it still boots to the home screen.

  2. I’m getting a fail. ODIN version 3.09 with Samsung S5 from ATT. She’s rooted. Using philz_touch_6.26-klte.tar.md5. I see NAND Write start!! then FAIL (Auth). Using wrong file?

    • Hey kkinderen I got the same error FAIL (Auth). Im not an android dev by any means but I think its possible the usb drivers are not right. Its just a guess.

  3. I’m having some trouble with this. I downloaded both files onto my phone, opened the zip folder and moved the mdr file into the zip folder. Then, when I tried to run the odin3 on my phone, it says it can’t run the file. Am I supposed to do this on my computer?

  4. Alas, on TMO GS5 still has stock revovery after this. Booting into recover is shows “updating.” I think it is re-writing the recovery on boot.

    • When using 4.4.2 and TWRP I had success, haven’t tried phil’s CWM yet, but as I’ve used both in the past, I have no preference.

  5. I followed all the steps and everything seemed to be working. I’ve been waiting awhile now for it to finish flashing to my phone. How long should it take? My phone screen says “Downloading . . . Do not turn off target!!”, but it’s been about 15 minutes. Odin says ” philz_touch_6.26.2-klte.tar.md5 is valid.

    • When using 4.4.2 and TWRP I had success, haven’t tried phil’s CWM yet, but as I’ve used both in the past, I have no preference. Also, make sure to have Auto Reboot and F. Reset Time checked. I got TWRP from galaxys5root dot com.
